I've just added support for mono-to-stereo FX plugins to HISE. In order to use it, enable the Support Mono FX option in the Project settings, and then add the HI_SUPPORT_MONO_TO_STEREO compiler flag to the Extra Definitions for each platform:

      Unbenannt.PNG

I've tested it with Cubase, the JUCE plugin host and Reaper, but let me know if it doesn't work on a certain host - except for FL Studio, I don't want to hear anything about this one :)

Excellent! Why no extra definition box for GNU/Linux? Is it not required or is it because we are hardcore and don't need no stinking (but convenient) boxes?

@ustk It's what you probably refer to as Linux ;)

The operating system is called GNU, Linux is a small (but important) part of it.

Congrats @Christoph-Hart thank you, that's great news. Here is my debug report.

                  • I tried Win & Mac together. This feature works well on Pro Tools and Logic Pro X mono channels, it takes mono signal, process and converts a stereo output channel, sounds great! But it seems like this flag cancelled stereo channel support on Pro Tools and Logic Pro X. Because in stereo tracks, the stereo version of the plugin doesn't show up, Also Mono version doesn't show up too.

                  • The output selections should be made independantly in Preferences Page. Maybe the developer doesn't want "mono to mono". Or "Stereo to Stereo". So the separate boxes will be better option. (Like that: "Mono Support", "Stereo Support", "Mono to Stereo Support")

                  • NOTE: By the "mono to stereo" feature only for Pro Tools, Logic Pro X and Garage Band hosts. Other hosts doesn't affect that. You while debugging, you need to use these 3 hosts, not Cubase or Reaper...etc.

                    @Christoph-Hart
Yeah in Logic pro X and Pro Tools, the stereo versions are not showing.

                    Did you fix that?

@Christoph-Hart what is the current status of this feature?

I added HI_SUPPORT_MONO_TO_STEREO=1 to the extra definitions and Logic is only reporting 2 in and 2 out in Auval.

Anyone else able to get this working since this original post?

@optimistic Yes it works. You also need to enable mono support on the project preferences section. Maybe you also need to uncheck the Force Stereo option. This mono to stereo plugin version needs to be exported separately and it will have a different id and name (such as adding - m to s afterfix to the name) , otherwise it will conflict with the normal stereo version.

You can try this feature with making a simple reverb plugin. Then you should be able to use this reverb on a mono channel in Logic Pro or Pro Tools and the output of this mono track will be stereo after this reverb is inserted.

                          @orange Thanks for the help!

You are right that I did miss the "Support Mono FX" option.

After enabling that option Logic does see it as supporting 1 and 2 channels when I rescan the AU however I notice two issues ...

                          • The plugin still doesn't appear as an available insert option for mono tracks. Only stereo tracks.

                          • The GUI never appears. It just continually hangs with the plugin window waiting to generate the UI.

Logic (and AU I believe) supports mono to stereo inside of a single AU so usually there wouldn't be a need for a separate binary. However I believe you are correct about VST.

Ableton Live doesn't support mono inserts of any kind and the plugin opens and works as expected there. It's just Logic that it won't load at all.

Have you or has anyone else built a mono to stereo AU recently and been able to get this functionality to work?

@optimistic Let's say the plugin's name is MyPlugin and the plugin code is Abcd

                            • You need to export the plugin with MyPlugin name, with Abcd plugin code and without Mono to Stereo enabled. That is the normal stereo version.

                            • You also need to export the plugin separately with Mono to Stereo enabled (HI_SUPPORT_MONO_TO_STEREO=1 and enabled the Support Mono FX in the preferences section) , MyPlugin - Mono to Stereo name and a different Plugin code (let's say Abcz this time). This is the Mono to Stereo enabled version.

Have you done this? If you export the plugin with only different names and if the Plugin Codes are the same, Logic will detect only one.

As previously mentioned, "Mono to Stereo" feature is only for "Logic" and "Pro Tools". So you only need to prepare Mono to Stereo versions for AU (Mac only) and AAX (Windows & Mac) versions. NOT FOR VST.

@orange Again, really appreciate you helping out here.

Your steps did work. I followed them exactly and was able to build an AU which could be loaded on a mono track as a stereo track.

The issue I see though is that this requires having two separate plugins and what I was hoping for was a single plugin which could either be loaded as mono, mono to stereo or stereo depending on the track type.

In my experience the only company offering separate plugins for this behaviour is Waves. Most others have a single plugin.

From a user perspective this also causes issues because AU preset data can't be copy and pasted between the different instances and the preset folders also won't be shared between the two.

Attached is a screenshot of TSAR-1 by Softube showing the type of experience I was expecting.

Do you know if this is possible with HISE?

As far as I know, only separate versions are available with the current Hise version.

By the way, you have a very cool plugin library :)

@orange ah, ok! Thanks for the help and that makes things clearer.

@Christoph-Hart this would be a great addition for effects to add to the backlog.

haha yeah! I am definitely more than a little addicted and I've been meaning to check out NoiseAsh plugins soon. I know a few people who have been raving to me about them. Great work on making those if that was you. Totally blew my mind when I realized those were made with HISE!
