Is there a guide or tips for running VMs on Mac? I'm on a 2020 M1 MacBook Air.

I know I'll need to run a Windows VM for compiling plugins for Windows, but I'm not sure if I'll also need to VMs for old macOS for compiling plugins for older Mac systems?

I'm just looking for general guidance on what VM app to use and how to set it up on Mac.

@dannytaurus Recently I have started using VM. I have started using VM for general curiosity and research. I wanted to see is it possible to make plugins on VMS. So here I can tell you from my experience that you can use any VMS on your Host Os and you can choose any guest OS of your choice.
If you want to use Windows on MAC OSX You can try PROXMOX or VMware Fusion.

You need to have atleast Catalina or Mojave OSX.

I've had such a horrible time trying to create a local Mac vm on Windows.

Can you tell me whether it's possible?
I got as far as the installation phase once where mac was setting up, but after waiting for that slow loading bar to cross the screen, it throws and error and all goes wrong xD

You might struggle on an M1 Mac. I believe you can do it with Parallels Desktop. I know on Intel Macs Virtual Box works well too.

If possible I'd recommended setting up a dedicated machine for VMs using Proxmox.

I'm going to try the Parallels method. Looks simple enough to run Windows 11 ARM version on a Mac M1.

Quick question though - will I be able to build plugins for Win 10 Intel from a Win 11 ARM VM?

What I have got so far is latest HISE 4.0 with FAUST 2.74.6.... Running Mac OSX 11 on Windows 11 (debloted) . I am using VMWare with Intel i5 8th gen CPU along with 32 GB RAM. No issue so far. But you will need to do lots of modification to overcome apple's shits.
Running Xcode 12.5 and Logic pro 10.6.3 ( from my old MacBook Air Mini)
Keep in mind if you use Mac OSX on Windows via VMWare it can install any upgraded mac OSX like the latest macOS Sequoia. But compiling HISE is difficult. So I have tried BigSur and Catalina.
Previously I have tried Monterey and Ventura but it is throwing error. HISE not being compiled.

** I have no idea about AMD system . No idea about ARM based system M1 chip.

I'm on Mac M3, I am running UTM for both macOS and Windows virtualisation, very easy and straight forward!

I'd like to be able to use Proxmox, but unfortunately it wasn't avail for M+ processors when I tested a few weeks ago.

@ustk Proxmox is an operating system, so you need a machine dedicated to it - preferably with lots of cores and RAM
