Mac OS export Questions
-
Hello HISE community,
I'm happy to report that I have successfully built HISE from the source (on an Intel iMac) with help of David Healey, David's Terminal script and others help. Thank you all for your support on helping me get started on the right path on this new journey of virtual instrument creation. It was such a sense of accomplishment to finally see HISE successfully build and witness the whole process being automated.
Beyond that I have used HISE to create a very basic simple synth/sampler with a few knobs and a preset browser ... all working beautifully inside of HISE. This is I guess like my "hello world" virtual instrument. After my successful HISE build I opened up this project and attempted to export it as a Mac standalone and an AU and VST3 instrument, but that didn't work and it gave me some errors about wrapping the visual scripting synth into a DSP network or something to that effect. I somehow managed to figure out how to solve that issue on my own. But then there were more errors.
Eventually I went back to watching David Healey's YouTube Video about exporting on a Mac and tried using his Terminal Script ... the one where you need to download Packager and create a license.txt file. That didn't work either and I started getting all kinds of errors about a ipp.h missing file. That took me down a long rabbit hole trying to install Intel IPP and trying to figure out where to put it but eventually I found my way out of that hole by simply unchecking IPP inside of HISE in the project settings somewhere. My guess after reading all the HISE forum posts is that IPP is not needed on a Mac? Is that correct?
Regardless, once I disabled that checkbox in HISE I was finally able to use David Healey's Terminal Script to build successfully without any red errors in my Terminal Window and it generated the standalone Mac app as well as the AU and VST3 plugins. The packager, however, never showed up?
Anyway, I was sooooo excited to see that finally happen! But my excitement was premature because none of those items work. The standalone Mac app won't even launch and the plugins didn't pass validation in Logic. So at this point I have no idea what to try next. What is the next right thing to do to try and resolve this? Is this typical to have so many issues exporting even after successfully building HISE from source? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm a total newbie at all of this so maybe there is some key thing I'm overlooking?

Isn't this the same as this - https://forum.hise.audio/topic/8031/mac-os-build-problems/36 ?
You shouldn't use the build scripts yet. They are a tool to simplify a process. But you need to learn how to do it manually so you can understand what the tool is doing.
There is some weird permission issue on your Mac that is preventing the things you make from working. Beyond the things to try I provided in the other thread I don't really have any other suggestions, well you can always ask ChatGPT
-
@d-healey Hi David, the other thread started out the same but then turned into a thread about building HISE from source. I was finally able to accomplish that by creating a fresh new user account on my iMac... I think that resolved the weird permissions issue because I'm now able to build HISE from source using your script and HISE launches just fine now.
This thread is just about exporting from HISE on Mac OS and how to do that without getting errors.
-
@ElectroBlue can you export with the new account? Usually once you‘re behind that hurdle of compiling HISE compiling of projects work fine.
-
@Christoph-Hart Interesting. Well it does export a standalone Mac application without errors but then the app never launches. When I double click on it , it unexpectedly quits immediately with an Apple notification that the app can’t be opened and gives me an option to report or ignore or try again.
If I try to export VSTi and AUi I get a compile error in red in the Terminal… error : Cycle in dependencies detected, but could not be parsed. Please file a bug report with the build transcript and how to reproduce if possible -
@Christoph-Hart Here is a screenshot:

@Christoph-Hart I filed a bug report with Apple as it suggested in the compiled Terminal output
-
I guess this is not a very active user forum or not many willing to help out newbies which is rather disappointing. Oh well.
-
@ElectroBlue no the problem is that the issues you encounter seem to have something to do with how your system is setup so there is no advice that I can give you except for try another computer. MacOS is super finnicky sometimes but the issues you describe are not related to HISE but rather to compile stuff with your Xcode toolchain.
-
@Christoph-Hart well even that response is better than no response, but aren't you the guy who created HISE? Where are all the Mac users?
-
Where are all the Mac users?
We're all Mac users to some degree. If you don't have another computer you can try using a VM (but that's not an easy route if you haven't done it before).
-
@d-healey I have another M1 Mac laptop. I'll give that a try and see if it makes any difference. What I mean was it seems as though there is a rather small user base for HISE. I'm coming from Unity development where there are literally millions of devs on all platforms all over the globe using the software so I guess I've been spoiled with all that support. I now see that there is like 1000 people on this forum. Is that an accurate amount of actual users?
-
@d-healey using a VM is not exactly the best way to test for Mac support considering all the differences in hardware and OS versions. Like if I'm going to buy a new piece of software and I look at the system requirements and all it says is ... we tested it on a Mac VM... I'm going to pass on that software. I'd want to see what Mac hardware is supported and what OS version is supported. Does it support Intel and Apple Silicon or does it only support one or the other? Are there memory requirements? You see my point here?
-
@ElectroBlue of course there is a smaller user base. Compare the market for video games against the market for audio plugins, it‘s maybe 1:10000, which is why you also don‘t see a unity engine like framework from a big company.
Hise definitely has regular macOS users but they have never encountered your issues (myself included) so you can‘t expect them to give you the solution. Ask something like „What is xcpretty and what Xcode version do I need“ and you‘ll get an answer in about an hour.
-
@Christoph-Hart Got it. I understand. AND I have good news to share....
I tried HISE out on my M1 Macbook Pro and after a little bit of tweaking it... and as you mentioned ... installing xcpretty... I was able to export a working standalone Mac app! Finally! So I think the issue may have something to do with Intel Macs or possibly something on that particular iMac I was using... who knows?! lol -
@Christoph-Hart I still had issues with exporting the plugins.... got this error:
Building targets in manual order is deprecated - check "Parallelize build for command-line builds" in the project editor, or set DISABLE_MANUAL_TARGET_ORDER_BUILD_WARNING in any of the targets in the current build to suppress this warning
error: Cycle inside NEON-8X - VST3; building could produce unreliable results.
But I think this has to do with the version of Xcode I'm using on my laptop. I keep you posted.
-
@ElectroBlue Xcode 15 Beta 6 got rid of that error and finishes compiling the VSTi and AUi plugins without any errors but I don't know where it put them? I can't seem to find them?
-
@ElectroBlue look in your MacOS plugin folders
-
Intel macs are definitely supported and I‘ve been using one for years with HISE but since a year or so I‘ve switched all my mac systems to ARM so it might be possible that a few glitches have creeped in.
