I can find a lot of Kontakt instruments that use samples of vintage synths , as well as a multitude of Modeled synths.
What are the legal issues involved with this kind of stuff , its hard to find out ?
I have access to some amazing and rare synths so I am tempted.

Anyone done any research on this ?

If the original sounds are create purely through electronics (no audio recordings) then you can create your own samples and sell them just as you would with any other instrument. Even better than sampling a synth though is to recreate it with DSP 😛

But what about the multitude of vendors selling sample based Synths based on Vintage synths ?
Are they doing something "illegal" and just count on not getting caught or what is the deal ?
          This just as an example.

Do those vintage synths use audio recordings or electronic circuits to create their sounds?

@d-healey Oh , I misunderstood ! So if they are analog and yes, use circuits then it allowed I gather .

@lalalandsynth just be careful about using their name in the title of the item. Is fine to say you sampled it, but calling it the same thing is a nono. Ie, if you sample a steinway and call it "Bob's piano" that's fine, but not "Bob's steinway".

Yes, It all a bit dodgy , I do think the graphic design is copyrighted as well but people seem to mostly ignore that .
