Turning off custom graphics (unintuitively) fixed my main issue. Now your mentioned problem comes into play not getting my image names correctly, but I should be able to fix that.

@Straticah Solved it for now // disable the layer in object properties, keep it visible // move it to root // put it back to the needed position.
seems just changing the setting does not work immediately. -moving it in layers seems to fix that
