Hackintosh decision...(yes/no)
-
So my access to a Mac has been sporadic - which is no way to run a development business as we all know, but as yet I dont have a revenue stream from the Mac plug-ins(well any HISE-based plug-ins yet really) so I dont have a lot of cash-to-splash.
So I was thinking of getting a Hackintosh, something like this:
Has anyone any experience with this sort of set-up for HISE development?
@Christoph-Hart - can you think of any HISE-specific problems likely to show up?
-
I don't have any experience with Hackintoshs, but my educated guess is that there are a lot of nasty issues around the corner waiting to make your life more difficult if you don't use a "original" mac hardware for development - as things like codesigning and compiling might have more strict requirements to "genuity" than using it as day-to-day tool.
The best way to get a mac for development is a used / refurbished Mac Mini 2012. You can still develop on Windows, but use this for compiling.

@Lindon NO with huge N and O. I did a hackintosh 5 years ago. Updating was a pain. Got lot of kernel panics. Etc etc.
Is like having a Mac without the best of a Mac (zero hardware issues/compatibilities with OS since they do both. Hardware and software)
Just my 2 cents. A Mac user since 1995 -
@Lindon this will be more than enough. And if you get a solid state hd you'll be as good as with a brand new

I'm using a 2012 Mac Mini that someone gave me, I've triple booted it with Linux Mint 17, Mojave, and Win 10. It was a little tricky to set up initially but it's running smoothly now :)

@d-healey triple boot??? WOW, Bootcamp allows only Mac/Win thing. Are u using grub or something like that?
-
@hisefilo I'm using bootcamp for Mac and Windows and then I made an extra partition for Mint. I'm using rEFInd as the boot manager.
This is the guide I used - https://robpickering.com/triple-boot-macbook-pro-macos-windows-10-linux/
Everything went fine until I got cocky and decided to add an extra partition that all the OSs could see so that I could share data between them. What followed was 9 hours of misery, but then I got it all working :)
I'm using one of these and one of these. So I can connect the Mac Mini to the same monitor, mouse, and keyboard that I use for my main PC. I just press a couple of buttons to swap between the PC and the Mac Mini. Much better than having to work with two separate setups.

@d-healey YOU ARE A BRAVE MAN!
