Is there a way to make samples play backwards?

I don't know... i would have to dig real deep into the streaming engine and honestly I think reverse playback is a bit 90ies :) What do you need it for?

I have a few Kontakt instruments that have it in and I'd like to adapt them for HISE. It's mainly being used for sound design instruments, creating swells and that kind of thing. It's not a must have feature by any means (I could always just reverse the samples outside of HISE), I think it's a bit of a novelty but some customers and some of my scripting clients like it.

Could you live with deactivating streaming for reverse samples? This would be really easy to implement but making the streaming engine fetch the samples from disk the other way around is pretty annoying (especially with all other sampler features like sample start mod and looping)

Yea I don't think that would be a problem, if RAM usage becomes an issue I'll tackle it with the other method.
