Total Beginners Guide to HISE
-
Hello everyone, I hope this finds you well.
I’ve been hunting around the internet for sometime to find a system I can use to bring my ideas to life and I very much believe HISE is it. Only thing is I’m a complete beginner in software development… period! Coding is still pretty Alien to me but I feel HISE will get me where I want to go. My question is… Does anyone know where I can find a crash course for HISE that would help me go from absolute dummy, to a reasonable plugin developer? If there is a good thread here or video or formal course somewhere out there, I’d really appreciate a steer in the right direction.
Cheers,
Ed

I will be releasing such a course very soon ;)
In the meantime you can checkout some of the videos on my YouTube channel, I have quite a few beginner friendly ones. For scripting I recommend you start with the Scripting 101 video.
There's also lots of information in the HISE documentation and on this forum: https://docs.hise.audio/

David's youtube all the way, watch everything, copy along with all of it, then start pulling apart some of the example snippets found in Help >> Browse example snippets to learn more. I want to add that AI is tempting and can be useful for some math and maybe some repetitive stuff, but don't trust it for blocks of code, it will add nonsense and teach you nothing, leaving you unable to actually understand what you've built, which becomes important when you need to troubleshoot or scale up. Once you have the basics of paintRoutines, mouseCallbacks and inline functions down, everything starts to click in to place and most questions are answered here in the forum for more specific stuff

Thank you @d-healey and @rglides rglides, your replies are both very helpful. I’ll will jump onto the videos you suggest, I did look at one before I posted but it was a fast paced overview so it felt a little overwhelming for a none coder. I’ll go back to the specific videos you suggest as well as the documents. I’m super interested in your forthcoming course @d-healy, do you have an eta?
Cheers,
Ed

Just been poking around the internet with your name @d-healey and found this course...
Creating Virtual and Sample-Based VST/AU Plug-in Instruments with HISE - Music Hackspace
Discover how to create custom VST3 and AU plug-ins with HISE. Our comprehensive guide covers everything from installation and compiling to UI design.
Music Hackspace (musichackspace.org)
Is this the course you spoke about in your reply? Seems like it is available now to purchase, is that correct? Sorry if this is a dumb question but worth checking before I part with any cash.
Cheers,
Ed

@suttonaudio no that's an old course that's being retired. The new course will be better and more in depth and up to date. ETA is July. If you want to purchase the hackspace course send me a DM first.

@d-healey not sure how to DM on this forum, it isn’t immediately obvious but I would like to continue the conversation about the video courses on offer. Are you able to DM me and I’ll respond.
Cheers
