            @Straticah I was wondering (if that's something you're willing to share 🙂)...

How do you proceed with the filmstrip export for them to be so neat? Do you export the images at highRes then downsize them? Or export directly to the GUI size?

Also, what about lightning? Do you use classic 3 points lightning techniques or do you place as many lights you need so the result looks nice from the front view?

            (intermediate level here!)

Hey @Matt_SF so my setup is always the same for my Knobs. I use a cold left light and a warm right light and balance them out how i like it. In addition to that i use a HDRI image to give glossy parts an interesting reflection or to brighten up the scene. Usually the hdri is not visible (only its effect) but in this case i have enabled it in the viewport.
I render each knob step in 250px size and import the sequence into photoshop to add contrast or add elements. For a VST Gui i would always go GUI res x2.
Lmk if you have any other questions :)

@Straticah Quick question , do you exclude shadows from HDRI ?
HDRI shadows usually extend beyond the render frame , what do you do in these cases ?
I normally use a sun to get the "harsher" shadows.

@lalalandsynth there are two solutions i use most of the time, one is to use the object as alpha so everything that goes beyond is masked or rendering without a shadow catcher so the shadow only hits the object not the environment :)

here you can see that the object is floating so it does not cast any shadow - the camera is also cut at a certain point below the object
The brown and blue ball are the additional area lights.

@Straticah thank you very much for your insight! I moved on to LAF lastly but sometimes it's not enough. I'll try your advice and I hope I'll come up with something nice :)

Figma is also very nice and easy if you need animated graphic elements. These are not 3D rendered but the shadows and gradients makes it look like they are.

@Straticah Ho do you then render individual elements from figma ?

these two do the same thing which is animating graphics in a simple way,
most of the time it is just a rotation

Every approach is unique and different. It doesn't matter what software we use, only matters how we are using. I personally a big fan of 3D Software and always curious to learn techniques.
For my works I always use AI, PS and AE. Sometimes C4D. So a big thumbs up for Figma. One day I will give it a try.

Yes there are lots of choices, the only important thing is the way to use these tools. I use Cinema 4D with Octane Render, PS, AI & AE combination.

3 point lighting usually doesn't enough for me, in the end there are more than 10 light sources (some of them are lighting panels with small amounts) and also a good HDR image for the surface reflections.

There is an option for the surface shadows (Shadow Catcher) in Octane Render which is an easy way to make Matte Shadow renders.

I like how people contribute here, and it's a pretty great community so far and I appreciate all the help; so I wanted to give back something.

In this posting, I love those knobs, but they're purple, they may not match the existing theme of the UI. If you want to take hours off your life modifying each one, you could, but rather than that I wrote a shell script that I think will help. This allows you to modify the hue, saturation and brightness of an image via ImageMagick. I included some safety governors, a run directory (to preserve the source images from change) and also logging. This will modify a directory full of frames for as many as you have in the directory.

                                            Here are some examples:

                                            Original Knob:
                                            Knob Dabdab_00000.png

                                            [huemod]: Knob Dabdab_00000.png - Brightness: 200 | Saturation: 100 | Hue: 150
                                            Knob Dabdab_00000.png

                                            [huemod]: Knob Dabdab_00000.png - Brightness: 200 | Saturation: 100 | Hue: 190
                                            Knob Dabdab_00000.png

                                            [huemod]: Knob Dabdab_00000.png - Brightness: 100 | Saturation: 50 | Hue: 50
                                            Knob Dabdab_00000.png

This has also been tested with Strip Generator.exe (and believe it or not it runs under WINE)

The script can be found here: https://uploadnow.io/f/prc7nSH (updated link)

                                            Enjoy!
