Parameter Modulation Within a DAW

I work in Ableton Live and I want to modulate the Knobs that I've added to a VST. With other commercial VSTs this is not an issue; is there something special that I need to do in order to allow Ableton to automate parameters on my VST?

Have you declared them as plugin parameter (setting the isPluginParameter property to enabled plus giving it a proper parameter name)?
