Viewport sync, or able to script?

It would be nice to be able to, either link 2 or more viewports together, or to have scripting access to the viewport component.

My dream scenario is this:

2 panels, each panel inside two viewports.
Scrolling viewport1 horizontally or vertically, will also scroll viewport2 at the same amount.

In the propertyEditor there is a "linkedTo" property, but it doesn't seem to do anything.
