Linux VSTi plugin export formats and the binaries folders

I´m exporting a VSTi from Linux Mint 17, running HISE Scriptnode, and I am getting only 2 files in my /my-hise-project/Binaries/Builds/LinuxMakefile/build folder:

• "instrument-name.a"
• "instrument-name.so"

Is this the actual VST plugin files for Linux DAWs?

Do all Linux DAWs and VST compatible applications use any of these formats? Or is it different for Arch-linux/Debian/Red Hat etc ?

(I have read this other thread and it seems to be .so in reaper at least)

.so is the extension of the vst2 plugin.
