How to Restore Non-Preset Data in the DAW?

Does anyone know how to store non-preset data for plugin instance within a DAW?

I've been following this conversation, but am not quite there, yet.

Restoring properties with DAW session

Are only components that are set to saveInPreset saved/restored with a DAW session?
